ChatGPT Plus vs Claude Pro: Which Subscription Is Worth It?

The Short Version

ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro are the entry-level paid plans for the two most widely used AI assistants. Both unlock stronger models and higher usage than the free tiers. They differ in which extras are bundled, and in the end the right choice depends on which model gives better answers to the kind of questions you actually ask.

What Claude Pro Includes

According to Anthropic's pricing page, Claude Pro costs $20 per month billed monthly, or $17 per month with annual billing ($200 billed up front).

Pro includes everything in the Free plan, plus:

  • More usage than Free
  • Claude Code
  • Projects
  • Access to more Claude models
  • Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365

    What ChatGPT Plus Includes

    According to OpenAI's pricing page, ChatGPT Plus includes:

  • Advanced reasoning models
  • Expanded messages and uploads
  • More advanced image creation
  • Expanded deep research
  • Expanded memory and context
  • Projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs
  • Expanded Codex usage
  • Early access to new features

    • How to Choose

    Feature lists only get you so far. A few questions are more useful:

  • Which tools are already part of your day? If you want image creation, custom GPTs or scheduled tasks, those are on the Plus list. If you want Claude Code or Claude inside Chrome and Microsoft 365, those are on the Pro list.
  • Which model answers your questions better? This is the one that matters most, and no pricing page can tell you. It varies by task and by person.
  • How heavily will you use it? Both plans have usage limits, and both vendors sell higher tiers for heavier use.

    • The honest way to answer the second question is to run the same prompts through both models and read the results next to each other.

    The Catch: You May Want Both

    Once you compare the two on your own prompts, you may find that neither model wins every time: one is better on some questions, the other on others. Paying for two separate subscriptions, and copying prompts between two tabs, is a clumsy way to get the best of both.
